In collaboration with our partners at the Blue Marine Foundation, we are excited to share the Namibian Ocean Literacy Toolkit, a groundbreaking learning resource designed to expand ocean education across the country.
This toolkit was created through a collaborative process that included two knowledge-sharing workshops held in Swakopmund, Namibia, bringing together educators, conservationists, and key stakeholders from institutions such as UNESCO, NaDEET, EduVentures, the Ministry of Fisheries and Marine Resources (MFMR), and the Ministry of Education, Arts and Culture.
Namibia’s rich marine environment plays a crucial role in supporting biodiversity, local livelihoods, and national development. However, with only a small portion of the population living along the coast, ocean literacy remains limited. This toolkit aims to bridge that gap by providing accessible information and engaging learning activities tailored to the Namibian context.
Structured around the seven principles of ocean literacy, the toolkit highlights Namibia’s unique marine ecosystems, the importance of ocean conservation, and how the ocean shapes daily life – even for communities far from the coast. Educators, students, and conservation advocates will find practical tools to integrate ocean knowledge into learning spaces, supporting national and global sustainability goals, including SDG 14 (Life Below Water).
With Namibia actively contributing to the UN Ocean Decade (2021–2030), this toolkit serves as a timely and essential guide to fostering greater public awareness and action for ocean health.
Download the toolkit here and start your journey to understanding and protecting Namibia’s ocean heritage.
